Movie Reviews, "The Happening" "Calvaire" "Dont Look Now"

The week I have watched a few films, some good, some bad. Here is my review for these flicks.

The Happening (2008)- I am very disappointed in the films M.Night.Shymalan has been producing. At one point I read that he was going to be the next Speilberg however his films are becoming worse and worse. The best were 6th sense and Unbreakable. The Happening seems to be propaganda for environmentalists. The whole concept of plants killing off the human species is not a bad idea but there was no story in this film. There is a great setup, good cast, awesome idea, but no power in the writing. I was expecting so much more going into the film.

Calvarie "The Ordeal"(2004) - This first time director, Fabrice Du Welz, had a great idea for a horror film. He grew up watching all the old classics and wanted to create a film which was a homage to his favorites. The only flaw is that he attempted to use two characters to tell this story. The character of Marc Stephens is very strong. A singer who gets lost in the country must struggle to survive. You connect with him at the beginning and instantly fall into his world. Bartel on the other hand was a character meant to be seen in everyone but Marc. Good idea however it didn't work. When using one personality to create every character the writer looses that edge on the film. Characters morph together and become one. It would be more interesting to see a web of creepiness, having multiple personalities, rather than just one solid lump. Getting beyond the characters one will get wrapped up in the situation. The horror in the film is there. I was very creeped out from start to finish. There are some parts where my mouth dropped. Favorite scene in the film is towards the end when its christmas. This whole scene was shot so well and is very shocking.

Dont Look Now (1973) - I was watching an interview with Brad Anderson and he said that this film was one of the movies which inspired him to make "Session 9." Session 9 is such a good horror film that I had to see what Brad pulled from. Dont Look Now was a good 70's film. I still cant get over how creepy the lady is at the very end of the film. There is some good tension and some unbelievable scenes for the time. I enjoyed watching. Defiantly not in the horror style of today.

My Verdict

The Happening - Dont expect much if you choose to go see it. Ending was very disappointing. I miss the twist endings on his films.

The Ordeal - Worth watching if you like horror films. Just remember the story is not very good and the ending sucks however it is pretty creepy.

Dont Look Now - It is a little slow however I would recommend if you are going to sit down and allow yourself to get wrapped up in the film. Otherwise it wont be as shocking.

I am looking for some good horror films to watch. If you have a suggestion of a film let me know.

Lady Cadaverly Information

This is for those of you who do not know anything about this project.  I have been receiving questions so I thought I would like to clear a few things up.

First off this is not my story.  I did not write the script and I did not direct the film.  My friend Andrew Keogh created this film for his senior thesis project last year.  All the footage you are seeing was shot in September and October of 2007.

However the film was never completed.  We shot about 80% and then due to a terrible accident we had to stop production.  It's been months since anyone has talked about the film but recently the director has given me permission to finish the project.  My original position on the film was cinematographer.  I am now stepping in to Direct and Edit the final product.

All the footage you are seeing in the trailer is from our original 12 shooting days.  We will resume production this September hopefully finishing the film by November.

If you have any other questions or comments about this film please contact me directly at Jevendovey@yahoo.com

This is very exciting!  Michael just sent out this press release about the adaptation I am doing.  The script is currently being edited however as of now we have a very solid script.  The story is so good and so unexpected.  I have read a good deal of Michaels work and all of his stories suck me in and make my heart race.  He is defiantly one of the best horror authors I have read in a long time.

If you would like anymore information about the project please contact me at Jevendovey@yahoo.com

There are a good deal of very talented actors waiting to read the script, some who you might have seen on the big screen.  More updates to come.  Keep checking back.

New Films will be posted on Youtube - First TimeReader Release

I am going to be putting all my videos up on youtube within the next week.  I would love some feedback from people who have not seen some of these films.

An older film which has not been released before will be going up as well.  This film is by writer director Jaime Greenberg.  I worked as her cinematographer and editor on this project.   Last year there was a serious accident which took Jamies Life.  She was an amazing writer and director.  Jamie is very missed by the entire Occidental film community and many others.  Her film "Timereader" is a cool little piece she filmed for her senior thesis project.  It's only a short 12 minute film so if you get a chance check it out.

Lady Cadaverly - Film to be finished

Lady Cadaverly was started last year around September.  The film is written by Andrew Keogh and was scheduled to be finished last november.  About 12 days into shooting we had some major problems and ended up stopping the film completely.  Since then I have been sitting on the footage.  I was the cinematographer for this film and I am now going to step in as director and finish it.  We have about 80% of the movie completed.  I have just talked to the actors and everyone wants to see this film completed.  I am very excited to be coming out of this slump and actually taking another crack at the movie.

The film is about a mortician who has been gassing himself from a faulty crematorium.  He believes he is a creature of the night.  While this is going on two people are trying to figure out where one mans dead wife is.  Someone has been vandalizing her grave and now her bodies gone.  The stories twist as Lady Cadaverly steps into the picture and a TV producer decides to make a reality show out of the grave yard.  This film is pretty nuts and I have had so much fun working on it.  Its not the most serious script however it is very different.  Andrew is an amazing writer, being able to twist stories and create a picture of absurdity.

I am currently working on a trailer from the footage we have shot so far.  Keep checking back.  It should be finished within the week.

Cain Rose Up - Stephen King adaption

I am shooting a Stephen King adaptation of the short story, Cain Rose Up.  It's a very cool piece dealing with school shootings and religious extremists.  I am the first Dollar baby to have received rights to shoot this story.  It is very exciting and there is a great group of people working on the film.  For any other information check out my sites dedicated to the movie specifically.
